SECOND SUNDAY SALON & ART TALK

MARY MOQUIN & MARC KUNDMANN
Encaustic & Wax-Based Media
Sunday, May 13
2:00 - 4:00 pm $5.00 @ the door

Tangled, by Marc KundmannJoin Mary Moquin and Marc Kundmann for a conversation about their work in encaustic and wax-based painting. Marc and Mary showed their work recently at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. They will discuss their individual attraction to the medium and their use of its unique properties to explore memory and place in the Cape Cod landscape and beyond.

Moquin uses a mixed media approach often incorporating the use of hot or cold wax. She holds a BFA in printmaking and an MFA in painting from UMass Dartmouth, and teaches painting at the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable.

Kundmann studied with fine artists connected to the long tradition of painting and art-making on the Cape including Robert Henry, a student of Hans Hofmann, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and work in a more expressive way, responding to color and composition and creating work from both understanding and emotion.

This is the second in a series of talks by and for artists and art appreciators. In June, we will have Ron and Tracy Lindholm of Cape Cod Framing to talk about restoration. A $5.00 suggested donation can be made at the event.

Artist-in-Residence

As part of the expanded mission of the Hyannis Harbor Arts Center, Julien Havard, artist, designer and former Broadway dresser, is the Hyannis Harbor Arts Center’s Artist-in-Residence for Summer, 2011. Julien’s studio at the Center will be open for visitors Wednesday– Sunday, 12-5 p.m., by chance or by appointment. He will also be conducting workshops at the Center. In August, Havard will have a formal gallery opening and dual show with his friend and fellow artist, Sutton Foster.

Julien studied Fashion Illustration at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s School for Art and Design in London. Coming from a family that has always been involved with the theatre, Julien found his way to Broadway. He has spent the last 20 years dressing some of the biggest names in the business, including Sutton Foster, with whom he worked for nine years. On June 12th, Ms. Foster won her second Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance in the revival of “Anything Goes”. She made a heartfelt acceptance speech at the Awards Ceremony, in which she acknowledged that her dresser, Julien Havard, was going to be moving to Cape Cod to pursue his dream as an artist.

In addition to his career on Broadway, Julien never stopped creating a variety of artwork including paintings, three-dimensional works on paper, hand-painted furniture, jewelry and other wearable art. He has created many ink drawings and murals depicting characters from the musicals he worked on over the years. He opened a gallery, LOVE JULIEN STUDIOS, in the heart of the East Village.

Julien completed commissions for Dreamworks Animation, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and a long list of well known actors including Megan Mullally, Delta Burke and Toni Collette. His murals have been featured in productions by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and the METRO PCS Summer Concert Series.

Julien’s work is created with a big heart, a wild sense of humor and reflects his own unique view on life. His style is original and unmistakable but above all, his art is created to be accessible to all.

BUILDING HISTORY:
The Hyannis Harbor Arts Center, formerly known as the Guyer Barn, was accepted into the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, was built in 1865 by Captain Sidney Crowell and is a typical example of early wood frame construction. Arthur Guyer, a pharmacist for whom it was later named, acquired the barn at the turn of 20th century. The barn has had a number of owners and uses over the years, including a bicycle shop. A studio/workshop was added to the barn to be used as classroom space. In 1959, the Town of Barnstable acquired the building, but it was not until 1986 that the Board of Selectmen approved the use of the building as a gallery. Pat Curcio who served as director for many years, passed away in August 2007. Pat was an accomplished artist in her own right and a champion of the arts in Hyannis. The arts community will sorely miss her tireless dedication.
