ARTWORK ON LOAN PROGRAM
AT BARNSTABLE TOWN HALL
The Town of Barnstable has an “Art on Loan program” for local artists to temporarily display their work on meeting room walls around Barnstable Town Hall. See artist Jack Ahlin's work through February 17th.
Jack Ahlin began painting and taking art courses after relocating to Cape Cod some 15 years ago. With a background is in mathematics and physics painting now has become a source of complete joy for him. “Early on, he learned not just to look at the world around him, but to see it. Skies had been just blue and trees just green.” The choice of subjects for his acrylic paintings developed from his love of the time spent painting and learning to paint. The choice of subjects stems from his viewing nature for shapes, color combinations, reflections in standing water, shadows, and cloud filled skies.
He uses what he observes as the basis for creating his paintings. A member and former officer of the Cape Cod Art Association, Jack Ahlin has exhibited widely at various venues, including the Cape Cod Art Association, the Falmouth Artists Guild, the CapeCod Cultural Center, and the Brewster Library. The recipient of many artist awards and ribbons for his acrylics, Jack also has been a featured participant in the Cahoon Museum’s annual July art auction, “The Great Brush Off!” Jack displays a decided preference for landscape but not your typical Cape Cod views.
The Artwork on Loan program is an opportunity for local artists to benefit from those passing through the meeting rooms. Visitors will find an inviting, attractive environment and opportunity to see and learn about local artists. For more information on the program, artists can email melissa.hersh@town.barnstable.ma.us or call 508-862-4767 or visit hyartsdistrict.com

Mid-Cape Regional Council:
Seeking New Members:
The Mid-Cape Regional Cultural Council , a town board and agency of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, supports a variety of programs in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences in Barnstable and Yarmouth that bring together artists, organizations, and local cultural groups for projects that serve our communities.
Last year, the council awarded nearly $9,000 in grants to fund projects that benefit our local schools, artists, and community organizations. Funded programs ranged from museum and theater field trips for students to musical performances and lectures at libraries and senior centers. Our local council receives funds from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to provide these grants. For more information, go to: http://www.massculturalcouncil.org/applications/lccapp.asp
The Mid-Cape Regional Cultural Council is comprised of volunteers, representing the towns of Yarmouth and Barnstable. The Council has openings for new members. The board is seeking those with experience in arts administration, arts education, fine art galleries, public art, museums or other professional arts or historical organizations or those that have a strong interest in or are patrons the arts.
As a member of the committee, you help to identify community priorities, review funding applications and decide how to distribute funds. The council meets throughout the year, usually on the last Tuesday of the month at 7PM at Barnstable Town Hall. Grant review meetings occur in the fall. All committee members serve without compensation. Members of the Cultural Council must be approved by the Town Council, following an interview by the appointment committee.
For questions, please e-mail Treasurer Becky Lawrence, artsbec2@comcast.net.

We share another story: Cotuit artist Sandra O'Connor spent time out at the Halfway House as well. "My plan going out was to do a pencil sketch an hour but the colors were so amazing, I couldn't stand just working in graphite so I broke out my little travel box. So what I ended up doing was a small painting every couple of hours throughout the day. I would wander and photograph whatever appealed to me compositionally, texturally or color wise. Then I filled in details back in my studio the day after, while the experience was still fresh in my heart and mind."
